Outdoor Education
At Walcamp, located 70 miles east of Chicago in Kingston,
IL, students have a unique opportunity to learn from nature.
With acres of woods, ponds and streams surrounded by farmland,
Walcamp is the ideal living laboratory where children can
explore and learn. Off-site properties such as an emu farm
and an historic graveyard add diversity to the learning
adventure for Outdoor Education students.
Walcamp offers schools a self-contained
experiential environmental education program, including
overnight accomodations and meal plans. We offer a flexible
curriculum of educational and recreational units, including
weather, orienteering, ecosystems, plant and animal study,
astronomy, creative writing, fire-building, outdoor cooking
and wilderness survival, and canoeing, archery, nature hikes
and team challenges and sports.
Outdoor education allows for additional
developmental opportunities, from spritual growth through
Bible study and devotions, to community building through
mealtime and campfires, to the sense of independence many
children gain with their first overnight experience away
from home.
Outdoor education programs are structured
in a variety of ways, from a week-long program for a classroom
of 6th graders, to a series of daytime programs for home-schooled
children. Walcamp's staff can provide a fully coordinated
outdoor education event, help in the planning, implementation
and leadership of your program, or you can create and run
a program entirely on your own - the choice is yours.
Schools provide adult leaders to supervise
all non-programmed times at camp, transport students for
off-site learning, and sleep in the cabins with the students.
